Camping in HotWell Dunes, Arizona. This year their two hotsprings where filled!

So, on our 2010 Roadtrip we also visited HotWell Dunes in Arizona. Jerry visited it 9 years back and loved it.  Last year, we loved the camping in the desert part, but, the hotpsrings where dry.  The hotsprings here were discovered when they were drilling for water or oil, and came up with natural flowing hotsprings years and years ago. But, with the changes in the water tables last year, they stopped flowing. So, we went back to see if they had started flowing again.. Well, you can see from the pictures, there is water in their two hottubs, and they're HOT! I can hardly get in.

They built a pump powered by solar panels since last year. So, the environment's changed to such a degree that that they cannot flow on their own any longer, so, they've put in this pump.  The system is still one which naturally has the water flowing from one tub to out the reservoir that the animals live off of.  Last year the place was very dry compared to this year, the desert actually looked "green" this year! So, the water flow/pump stops when the sun goes down, the tubs empty, then the flow starts again in the morning, so they water is always fresh! NICE!

The solar system they designed and build which sits right next to one of the two hotspring tubs.  (Duke's not sure what to make of the pumps system in the cage.. he circled it slowly.  We often wonder what really he's thinking!)

Hotwell Dunes is classified as BML land, a Recreation Area.  It's full of sand dunes, where during the week day there are tons of people with the ATVs and dirtbikes having a blast. We like the week days best as it's empty.  There are only 10 camping spots, each one is really BIG.  In a typical RV Park (which we avoid), they'd cover the ground in cement, cut down the trees and collect money from 100s RVs the that same area.. The BML lands are all through the states, this one didn't have any drinking water or showers, just dug toilets.  We stayed last year for a couple of nights as well in our Westy.  We love camping alone in the desert.  Again, at an RV Park, you would have water & hydro, and you'd pay $30 dollars a night, verses what we paid, of $3 dollars a night..   The State Parks, which we also stay at alot, they provide hydro and power and nice showers and drinking water, they charge half of RV Parks, and they are MUCH nicer too as they often offer trails and keep the beauty of the nature around them.  (You'll see as the two we stayed at in New Mexico are State Parks..)

We tried riding our bikes, i couldn't do it, as the sand was too deep, but, Jerry's very stubborn, so, he did for a while.  Duke just ran around, I think he was laughing at/with the both of us.  So, we walked and soaked, and Duke & I went for runs each morning.  Duke runs after the biggest Jack Rabbits I've ever seen, their ears alone were each over a foot long, and their Jack Rabbit paws were often larger then Duke's paws.. He never catches them, and he loses them quickly, so, I'm not worried for the Rabbits or for Duke if he catches one! :)

Duke running FAST as we try to bike..
Jerry, very PROUD of himself for riding much further then I could in the sand.  (One stubborn man I married!).

In the morning, looking at the sand is fun, you can see many many many different sizes and shapes of animal prints.
I'm sitting in the shade by our RV..in our Campsite.
The sand gets SO hot high noon that Duke can't walk on the sand..he hides in shade or under the RV.
 Different views through our desert.
It gets so hot, that you can feel the heat from the sand in waves.  The temperature was around 108, it would be in the air, and wafting up from the sand.. So, you get baked all around.  Very different having surround heat.. This was JUST JUNE, imagine August! AAAAAHHHHH  To sleep at night, you need to just use the trick we've been told of by others who live in very warm climates and don't have AC, pour some water on you, and DON'T dry it off.. it cools you down and enables you to sleep.. We didn't have a sheet with us, as what most do is dampen their sheet, that, with a hope for a little breeze at night, keeps you cool enough to sleep.  Being in the middle of the desert, you don't have any electricity to run the AC full time, and you should only run the generator for two hours.  As we both love the silence, we didn't really want to run the generator at all..  We ended up running it for just 30mins to get the air moving before we went to sleep.   We loved it.  Really get to experience the desert this way.
I've stayed at the Hyatt, in Desert Palm Springs in California, with all it's 5 star glory, i much preferred our Hotwell Dunes experience.

OK! On to New Mexico next! Excellent camping & aliens!

Our Second DDD or 2011! Fred's Farm Grill in Arizona.. Best Pulled Pork so far!

Jerry tried their BBQ Sampler platter, found the Pulled Pork one of the best, if not the best, Pulled Pork he's every had! (He's had a lot! :) ).  I had to agree.. (We've heard of a few other excellent ones that we'll look to try two of them in our last 1.5 weeks of our trip!)

So, we had our second successful DDD on our 2011 Roadtrip! We looked for something in the direction of HotWell Dunes Arizona, we were delighted to find Fred's Farm Grill in Mesa Arizona (just east of Phoenix).

Fred's Farm Grill is on a Farm :).  They grow much of what they serve up.  Jerry had had pull pork BBQ in some of the best places across North America, this he said, was indeed the best!I have to agree with him.  If you are in the area, it's worth a stop! (We've been reading since this stop, that there are three that might be better, we're going to try stopping at two of them within the next two weeks!)

The back entrance to our DDD.
You ordered your food, then they buzzed you when it was ready.
Nice sweet potato fries, one of my favourites ! I don't like normal Fries, but, I'll eat all of these gladly. The best part of these actually where the dipping sauce, they had a pineapple salsa to die for.

Jerry's Malted Milkshake! YUMMY YUMMY!! I snuck a sip when we was taking pictures!
Showing off my mushroom burger and beat salad!
These were the cool mist blowers outside.. nice!
They had seating both inside and out.. Outside was 104 degrees when we where their.. they had methods to cool you down, inside and out.
Ladies, (Men turn away, you wouldn't understand how cool this was for us women..) so, the washrooms where all unisex. They each had one of each in them.
The for his part was cool, as it had a TV over it, playing an old old old Scifi movie..
The for hers or his part had a GiJo and a Barbie in the displays on either side.. very cool!
So, if you are in Phoenix, drive to Mesa, just east of Phoenix for a good fresh food at Fred's Fresh Grill.

Joshua Tree, California.. Hikes, Rolling into Cati & Rescue Teams

We were lucky not to be at Joshua Tree on the Memorial Weekend, as they say it was over flowing full.  We had plenty of spots to pick from, actually too many.. Jerry says I "made" him move around 10 times, I don't remember it that way, and he said it wasn't easy to make some of the moves I was requesting.  Well, our final camping spot was indeed perfect. ( when you are driving a 23' RV in a crowded campground with very narrow roads, someone and we all know who that someone is , will pick the most awkward spot to get into . The RV would need a hover mode and bow thrusters to get into it easily. Then when I mention it might not be a good spot because it's on a 30 degree angle sideways on the side of the hill.................... I get the look  !!! and the comment the shade is good there for Duke. the final spot was nice and no blood was spilled. )

 The perfect spot!
 Bike Riding through the desert!
  The perfect spot!
  The perfect spot!
The hill Duke & I climbed was full of holes, it was like a condo for all the desert animals.  The hills was alive with lizards, rabbits, chipmunks, roadrunners, quails, rattlesnakes, and a sorted other animals i didn't recognize.
View from the top of the little hill down to our campsite.. a moment before i fell.
Sitting on my left side after my encounter with the 80 thorns from the fall i had on my right bottom side.
So, when we first arrived, the visitor service's guy scared the living day lights out of me with regards to dogs in the desert. As you might remember from last year, Duke & I ran through the Arizona & New Mexico desert on about 7 different occasions, no issues (other then getting lost, but, when I'd say Duke, find daddy, he'd turn 90degrees and bee line it back to the camp, not sure how he knew, he has a built in GPS, Jerry gave me a hand held GPS which allowed me to wonder and I'd test it against Duke, both always got me back to Jerry... so, i regress.. ) the Visitors center told me that the reason dogs need to stay on leash, verses, just dogs must be on leash.. The reason is, there are so many rattlesnakes in the desert, AND dogs DO NOT SURVIVE a Rattlesnake bite, where humans normally do. (Later in this trip, when we were in a hotspring in Arizona, a firefighter guy was there, he said Duke would be fine if he got bit by Rattlesnake, that that guy was just laying it on thick to ensure the dog was safe..) The Joshau Tree visitor's guy said by he time we would get Duke to the nearest vet, he'd be dead. He went on to tell me where Rattlesnakes hang out, under bushes and rocks, all the places Duke likes to put his nose under or pee on, so, I kept Duke attached to my the whole time at Joshua tree, Jerry started saying that I talk to Duke more then I talk to Jerry. I do have to stop that.
So, we got our camp site set up, and Duke and I walked up a little hill to look around, one thing the Ranger said to me was to stay on trails, this wasn't a trail, the ground was really mostly pebbles so, I kept slipping downward, filling something stung me on the shoulder and leg at the same time, I looked and saw what looked like two very long thorny nose attached to what i thought was a weird green animal with thorns coming out of it's back. I pulled it out of my skin, as it just sat there, one on my shoulder and one on my right calf. Ended up it was a part of a thorny plant. Then I lost my footing and crashed down the hill (I let go of Duke), i stopped into a Cati, the same one that stung me earlier. It grabbed my butt and right leg. So, i was impaled in this stupid Cati's arms. I had to pull my self out and up. I had around 80 two inch thorns in me. So, I was saying Ouch Ouch Ouch Ouch, allot, and loudly.. No one could hear me, as we choose such a great campsite. So, I couldn't pull any more out, as my figures where full of holes.. The ones under my shorts where the worse, as when i stood up, they where about an inch into my butt and upper thigh, and my shorts now covered them pushing them further in... Ouch, Ouch, Ouch.. I'm blind in my right eye as well, so, I couldn't see that area. I could only see the back of my leg, every thorn i pulled out left a bubble of blood the size of small pea. So, Duke & I got determined and got ourselves down the hill, without any more injuries, Jerry was inside the RV fixing stuff. I knocked on the door, as there was NO way I could step up without a lot of thorns being pushed further into my back end. So, he came out, kept a straight face ( it was really hard not to laugh ) and brought out tweezers, water towels.. and started pulling out thorns. Well, Duke never licks me, as  don't like being licked, he kept licking where I had thorns just removed. Those plants also have little hair thin thorns that stick in your skin, those are harder to get out, a local later told me that you should us duct tape to get those out, I used a tweezers for hours, duct tape for the smaller ones would have been smart. Well, everything healed. I felt like a total fool. But, learnt my lesson as to what types of surfaces to walk on an which bushes to avoid!

So, we stayed in that night after my encounter with the thorning plant, with the windows open, as I didn't want to sit outside, I have to admit, I was kinda shook up.
Then the next morning, we were fine, Duke & I went for a 10km run through the desert, staying on roads this time. We visited to destinations on our run. I brought enough water for the both of us. On the way back I felt maybe it wasn't such a bright idea, as I was getting dizzy. But, we found some shade for a minute, and felt better. Duke, at one point, peed on the same type of bush that ate me the night before, there was the thorn with part of the plant on him, I knew what I was doing now, so I gently removed it right away, and he was fine, he looks carefully before he pees now.

Duke and I for our run in the morning.
 Duke infront of some palms.
In front of Split Rock in Joshua Tree, during our run.
A Joshua Tree, with the sun blazing through.  It started getting really really hot.  I should have started the run at 7am, not 8am.
This is the bloody plant one needs to learn NOT to fall on! 2inch thorns detach themselves from the plant on becoming a part of your skin.. There are also hair like thorns attached to the big thorns, so,  then removing the big thorns you get to have interaction with more thorns!

Later that day, Jerry & I went for a hike, to Skull Rock, that was cool (I ran right by it that morning and missed it).  We met some astronomers from LA, who invited us over to watch the stars with them that evening.  His name was Richard, more on him later.  So, we had a nice day around, hiking and biking when it cooled down again in the evening.  Jerry, Duke & I bike together.

Sofie on top of a rock watching the sunset.
Very cool steps through the desert.
 Scull Rock!
Jerry on the hike wondering through the rocks, withOUT incident.
Just a very beautiful Joshua Tree.
Then next day, Duke & I took off for another run, similar root as the day before, this time, the Park Ranger kept driving around, stopping and looking at tracks. I asked him what was up, he said he was just notified that someone was injured around here, on our way back there were more Ranger, Firemen, ERS and finally a helicopter.  We was our Astronomer, Richard, he had fallen off a rock.  He told us they come there often, so, they were very familiar with the place.  We never did get over to find Richard the night before, but, we hope he recovers well.

 At Sunset
  At Sunset
The firemen, EMS and Helicopter, all transporting Richard, to the hospital.

I did see families with little kids, three years old and such, on rocks and hiking, we saw people of all ages. I think you do have to respect the desert and NOT wonder off unless you know what you are doing.  Be safe, but enjoy. It's a vast beautiful place.  We drove through from one end to the other, it's a 2 hour drive.  We very much recommend the North end of the park to camp & hike in, it's beautiful.
ENJOY!

Our first (DDD) Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives in 2011's Roadtrip.. In California!

While on California Route 66, heading to Joshua Tree for a few days, we stopped at Emma Jean's Holland Burger Cafe. This was a place very much in the middle of no where.  We ate exactly what Guy Fieri did on his DDD show.  We each started with their famous biscuits smothered in their "stick to your ribs" (in a good way) gravy, followed by their Brian burger.. This isn't just any burger (as i don't like burgers normally), it's bun wasn't a bun, it was one & a half inch toasted sour dough bread, and the insides had instead of pickles, a spicy roasted green chile and  lots of Swiss cheese and a big burger.  I got the mini one, and Jerry got the normal sized one. We got one with fries and their other with onion rings.  Well, we each took half of our portions as take aways and had them for dinner, neither of us could finish the whole thing.

In the parking lot at Emma Jean's Holland Burger Cafe
Busy place, only open till 2:30 on weekdays and only till 12:30pm on Saturdays and closed on Sundays.  6 tables and the stools around the bar, and people constantly coming and going.

Above is ONE order of biscuits and gravy split into two for us. (That's me with my braids :). )
The left is my MINI burger and the right is the regular size.  WOW! I can't believe someone can make something that we can't finish!
This was their diner! In the middle of now where.. we recommend it highly.

Great place! Next we're into Joshua Tree for some hiking, biking & running to work our this DDD!
